What is different about an SR-22 in Elgin

Rural Texas drivers get hit harder by a suspension than urban ones, because there is no alternative at all. That is the argument for getting the filing in place the same week rather than waiting for a court date.

US 290 west toward Austin, or 95 north toward Taylor.

What is our services?

Here is what applies:

  • How long you need itTexas requires the SR-22 to be maintained for two years from the date of your most recent conviction, or from the date judgment was rendered against you. Not three years, and not two years from the day you file.
  • The clock does not restart when you fileThe two years run from the conviction, not from the filing. The department states it directly: file a year after your conviction and you carry the certificate for one more year, not two more. A new qualifying conviction can extend the requirement.
  • Who files itYour insurance carrier files the certificate with the department. Not every insurance company offers SR-22 filings — the department says so on its own page — so the company you have now may not be able to do it.
  • How long processing takesAllow up to 21 business days for the department to process an SR-22. Reinstatement fees paid online through License Eligibility process in roughly 24 to 48 hours; the compliance documents are the slow part. Plan around the three weeks rather than being surprised by it.
  • Your insurance card will not doA policy card or declarations page does not substitute for the SR-22. The certificate is a separate filing your carrier transmits to the department under the Safety Responsibility Act.
  • If the policy lapsesYour driver license or driving privilege is re-suspended, and you need a new SR-22 plus a $100 reinstatement fee to get it back. Continuity is the part you control.
  • If you do not own a vehicleYou still have to file. A Texas non-owner SR-22 policy satisfies the requirement and is usually the cheapest way to do it.
  • If you were actually insured at the timeYou may not owe a filing at all. If you had coverage on the date of the citation, your carrier can send a letter on company letterhead by fax, email or mail, and the department will review it. Allow 21 days.

Minimum coverage required: Texas’s minimum liability limits are 30/60/25 — $30,000 bodily injury per person, $60,000 bodily injury per accident, and $25,000 property damage per accident (Texas Transportation Code ch. 601 / Texas Dept of Insurance).

How much does our services cost in Austin?

The filing fee itself is small — carriers typically charge $15 to $25. Texas is explicit that the cost of the insurance is determined by the insurance company, not the state.

What actually raises your price is the violation behind the filing, not the certificate.

Your actual quote depends on the specific violation and its date, your age and how long you have been licensed, your ZIP code, whether you choose an owner or non-owner policy, your vehicle, your limits and deductibles, and any lapse in prior coverage.

The single most useful thing to understand: carriers disagree enormously about high-risk drivers. It is routine to see a wide spread between the highest and lowest quote for the same driver and the same coverage. That spread is the entire reason to use an independent agency instead of calling one carrier.

Reinstatement fees are separate from your premium

Reinstatement fees are charged by the state on top of whatever your insurance costs, and they vary by violation type.

Confirm your exact amount on your own official record with the state.

Rate figures on this page are third-party estimates shown for illustration and are not a quote. Your premium is determined by the insurance carrier based on your individual record. Texas does not set the price of your insurance.

How it works

  1. 1

    Pull your own requirements first

Log in to the DPS License Eligibility page and read what your record actually says. It shows whether a filing is required, what fees are owed, and what else is outstanding. Do this before you buy anything — and if you were insured on the date of the citation, you may not owe a filing at all.

  2. 2

Tell us the conviction and its date

In Texas the two-year clock runs from the most recent conviction, so the date decides how long you carry the certificate. Filing late does not add time on the end.

  3. 3

We shop carriers that actually file

Not every company offers SR-22 filings, which is DPS’s own wording. We compare the carriers that do, and tell you when a non-owner policy would be cheaper than what you asked for.

  4. 4

The policy is issued and the certificate is filed

Your carrier transmits the SR-22 to the department. Allow up to 21 business days for DPS to process it, and pay any reinstatement fees online so that part clears in a day or two rather than three weeks.

  5. 5

Keep it in force for the full two years

A lapse re-suspends your licence and costs a new filing plus a $100 reinstatement fee. If you switch carriers, the new company must file before the old policy cancels.

Mail goes to Texas Department of Public Safety, Enforcement and Compliance Service, P.O. Box 4087, Austin, TX 78773-0320. That address is for compliance documents when you owe no fees, or have already paid them online. If you are mailing reinstatement fees at the same time, everything goes instead to Central Cash Receiving, P.O. Box 15999, Austin, TX 78761-5999 — which is also where occupational licence packets go. You can also fax to 512-424-2848 or email PDFs to driver.improvement@dps.texas.gov. Write your full name, date of birth and driver licence number on every document, include a copy of your suspension notice if you have one, and allow 21 business days.

SR-22 questions from Elgin drivers

Is a DUI the same as a DWI in Texas?

No — they are separate offences in separate codes. DWI (Penal Code 49.04) means driving while intoxicated, which the code defines as losing the normal use of your faculties or having an alcohol concentration of 0.08 or more. It applies at any age and is a Class B misdemeanour. DUI (Alcoholic Beverage Code 106.041) applies <strong>only to drivers under 21</strong>, triggers at <em>any detectable amount</em> of alcohol, and is a Class C misdemeanour. Most national sites use the two words interchangeably; Texas does not.

Is SR-22 insurance a type of insurance?

No, and this is the single most common misunderstanding. An SR-22 is <strong>not</strong> a policy and not a coverage type — it is a certificate your insurance company files with the state to prove you carry at least the minimum liability coverage the law requires. The policy is the insurance; the SR-22 is the proof. You cannot buy an “SR-22 policy”, and you cannot send the certificate yourself.

Can I get my SR-22 removed early for good behaviour?

No. The two-year period is set by the date of your most recent conviction, not by how you drive afterwards. A clean record during the two years is what gets you to the end of it without the clock resetting — it does not shorten it. Confirm your actual end date on your own record through License Eligibility rather than assuming, and do not cancel before it.

How long do I need SR-22 insurance in Texas?

Two years from the date of your most recent conviction, or from the date judgment was rendered against you. Not three years — that is a figure borrowed from other states.

Does the two years start when I file the SR-22?

No, and this is the most valuable thing on this page. The two years run from the conviction date. DPS gives the example itself: file a year after your conviction and you carry the certificate for one more year, not two more. A new qualifying conviction can extend it.

Can I file an SR-22 myself?

No. Your insurance carrier files the certificate with the Department of Public Safety. Not every company offers SR-22 filings, which is the department’s own wording, so the company you have now may not be able to do it.

How fast will my SR-22 be processed?

Allow up to 21 business days. We can bind a policy and get the certificate sent quickly, often the same business day — but the department’s processing time is the department’s. Pay any reinstatement fees online through License Eligibility and that part clears in about 24 to 48 hours instead of three weeks.

What are the minimum liability limits in Texas?

30/60/25 — $30,000 for injuries per person, $60,000 total per accident, and $25,000 for property damage. Note that this is higher than the 25/50/25 most states use, so a policy written to another state’s minimum does not meet the Texas one.
