SR-22 Guide

How Long Do You Need an SR-22 in Texas?

Two years — but from your conviction date, not from the day you file. That distinction is worth real money and almost nobody explains it.

The short answer

Texas requires the SR-22 for two years from the date of your most recent conviction, or from the date judgment was rendered against you. The clock does not restart when you file — the Department of Public Safety says so directly. Filing late does not add time on the end; a new qualifying conviction does.

Search for how long an SR-22 lasts and most results say three years. For a lot of states that is roughly right. For Texas it is wrong, and the correct answer is better news than the wrong one.

Two years, from the conviction

The Department of Public Safety states the rule plainly: you must maintain a valid SR-22 for two years from the date of your most recent conviction, or the date a judgment was rendered against you.

Note what that sentence anchors to. Not two years from when the state notified you. Not two years from when your licence was suspended. Two years from the conviction.

The clock does not restart when you file

This is the part that saves people money, and it is the part that almost no website explains, because a page written to rank in fifty states cannot afford to be this specific.

An SR-22 must be maintained for a total of two years from the date of your most recent conviction; therefore, in this scenario you will only need to maintain it for one more year.

That is DPS answering its own FAQ about a driver who files a year after conviction. The requirement is a total of two years measured from the conviction, so a year already elapsed is a year already served.

If you have been putting this off — and plenty of people do, because the first quotes they get are frightening — you may owe less time than you assume. That is worth checking before you buy anything.

How to find your actual end date

Do not rely on a date you worked out yourself, and do not rely on ours. Your driver record is the authoritative answer, and you can read it yourself for free.

  1. Open the DPS License Eligibility page and sign in with your driver licence details.
  2. Read what your record says is required, and what is still outstanding. It will show whether the department has received and processed your certificate.
  3. Note the conviction date the requirement is tied to. That plus two years is your end date.
  4. If anything is unclear, call the department rather than guessing. We will also walk through it with you at no charge.

Do not cancel early

The two years have to be continuous. DPS warns that failing to maintain the SR-22 for two years without a lapse can bring additional enforcement action and further reinstatement fees.

If your policy lapses, your driving privilege is re-suspended, and getting it back needs a new SR-22 plus a $100 reinstatement fee. Cancelling a month early to save one premium payment is the most expensive saving available in this process.

The same care applies if you switch carriers. The new company has to file before the old policy cancels. Line the two up rather than cancelling first and shopping afterwards.

When it does end

Confirm the end date on your record first, then stop — and then change what you are buying. You are no longer a driver who needs a filing; you are a driver with an older conviction, and the market prices those very differently.

This is the moment to re-shop the whole market, and it is the part most agencies never call their clients about.
